If you have ever attended a Kayastha wedding, you probably
found it very exciting and joyous. Isn’t that what weddings should be about?
Full of excitement and fun as two souls conjoin in the sacred matrimony. Both
the families indulge in series of ceremonies to celebrate the weddings of their
loved ones. It all starts with the families trying to find a suitable boy/girl
within the community.
This process has been made much easier, thanks to the
internet. The families can scour for potential matches on various Kayastha matrimonial sites and find a
well-suited match for their children.
The proceedings start from the Lagan ceremony where both the
families send the lagan patrika along with betel nuts, gold-covered barley and
silver covered coconut. The families also send clothes, sweets, fruits,
dry-fruits etc. This is a very vital ritual among the Kayasthas. After this,
the date of marriage is fixed according to the consent of both the families.
Both families consult their astrologers to find a suitable muhurat for the
wedding. It is said that wedding should only be conducted in a shubh muhurat to
avoid any evil eye.
The celebrations of a Kayastha wedding kick-off with Bhat
nyota. The ceremony takes place a day or two before the wedding. The maternal
side of the bride/groom visits his/her house and give them their blessings and
offer gifts. This is followed by Haldi kutai wherein the mother of the groom,
accompanied by other ladies of the house, prepares a refined powder of turmeric
for the haldi ceremony. It is very vital for the haldi ceremony and bonding of
the women.
After the Haldi kutai, the tradition of Tilak ceremony is
conducted. In this ceremony, the brother of the bride along with other male
members visits the groom’s house. It is a symbol of acceptance of the groom by
the bride’s family. Several gifts like clothes for the groom, clothes for the
family, silverware, sweets, jewelry for the bride etc. are exchanged by both
the families. This is followed by the Mehendi ceremony which has a deep-rooted
traditional significance of a good omen before the marriage.
Then comes the wedding day when the male members of the groom
family set up the mandap with hay roof made of four bamboo posts and decorate
it with banana stumps and mango leaves. A lot of wedding rituals are performed
under this mandap on the wedding day.
After the setting up of the mandap, haldi ceremony is
conducted. In this ceremony, the haldi paste prepared during haldi kutai is
applied to the bride’s and groom’s face, hand at feet at their respective
houses. This ceremony is performed by all the females of the family. It is
believed that this ceremony drives away the pre-wedding jitters and adds glow
to the skin.
Then finally, in the evening the baarat proceeds to the
bride’s house which is welcomed very warmly by the bride’s family and snacks
are served to the baarati. Then like any other north Indian wedding, rituals
like Varmala, Saptapadi and Vidai are held.
The Kayastha weddings are very joyful, traditional and
colorful. But it is very important to find good matches as it is essential for
the success of a marriage, if you are looking for any matrimonial services in Lucknow, you can look at a lot of different
